Covington Public Housing Kids Learn Life Skills At YMCA Camp Ernst

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - For 7 weeks this summer, children in Covington public housing had an experience of a lifetime….learning new skills, gaining confidence, getting to know kids from completely different backgrounds, strengthening their academics, and all of the fun activities offered at YMCA Camp Ernst.

The program of the Housing Authority of Covington (HAC), in partnership with YMCA Camp Ernst, was for 25 children between the ages of 6-13. It was an intensive therapeutic group experience giving urban children the chance to work closely with educational specialists, mentors, community leaders and peers in a safe, supportive environment.

Emphasis was on practicing many of the YMCA’s core values, which includes: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility.

Each camp day for them began with academics focusing on reading and math skills because statistically urban kids fall behind in the summer time.
