Many holiday dangers are close to home

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 26, 2011) - For many, Memorial Day represents the unofficial beginning of summer, marking the onset of barbecues, parties and water sports. With that in mind, the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) reminds the public to continue to follow guidelines for food, outdoor and water safety.

"Activities like grilling, spending time outdoors and swimming are wonderful ways to celebrate the holiday and the onset of warm weather, but it's important to practice a few standard rules of public health," said DPH Commissioner Dr. William Hacker. "Practicing food safety while preparing and storing food will prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying and causing foodborne illness.

Highway to be dedicated to fallen soldier

A Memorial Highway will be dedicated to a local soldier who died while serving in Afghanistan.

Specialist Russell Madden, 29, was killed was killed when is convoy was hit by a missile attack in Konar, Afghanistan. He was a member of Delta First Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Brigade Combat Team. He graduated Bellevue High School in 2000. 

Senator Katie Stine will recognize Specialist Madden at the dedication.

Madden's memorial highway will be located within the city limits of Bellevue, Kentucky on KY 1120, Memorial Parkway.

The dedication will take place Tuesday, May 31 at 11:30 p.m. It will be at the Callahan Community Center at 322 Van Voast Ave. in Bellevue, Kentucky, 41073, directly behind the Bellevue City Building.

Covington bike ride Sunday a fun trip that supports local food

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Renaissance Covington and Keep Covington Beautiful are pairing up with Roebling Point Bookstore, Reser Bicycle Outfitters and Westside Action Coalition to raise money for the Covington Farmers Market and Covington Community Gardens by hosting an urban bike ride in Covington.

The Bike Ride for a Greener Covington will occur at 10:00 am on Sunday, May 29th, at Goebel Park in MainStrasse Village, 6th & Philadelphia Streets. The five-mile ride is suited for riders of all levels.

Richard Hunt, owner of Roebling Point Bookstore, 306 Greenup Street, is working with the Covington Bike Patrol to mark out the route and guide riders.

The ride costs $20 and includes a swag bag of donated items from Covington Yoga, Renaissance Covington, Roebling Point Bookstore, Reser Bicycle Outfitters, Cincinnati Nature Center, NKY Core IMPACT, St.

Governor orders flags to half-staff on May 30

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be displayed at half-staff until noon on Monday, May 30, 2011 in observance of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service.  In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. 

“Memorial Day is a time for Kentuckians and all Americans to honor those military men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice”, said Gov. Beshear.  “On Monday, I urge you all to take a moment and give thanks to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms and also recognize those who are still serving our country both abroad and at home.”

New hot air balloon to drop in on Summerfair

New hot air balloon to drop in on Summerfair

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A 15-story hot air balloon shaped like a Select 55 beer bottle will be dropping in on Summerfair 2011 at Cincinnati's historic Coney Island as part of its 55-city nationwide tour.   The balloon (168')  is nearly as tall as the Statue of Liberty and takes nearly an hour to inflate.

The balloon is scheduled to be there for all three days of the festival, looming over Cincinnati's California neighborhood and adjoining parts of Anderson Township.  It will also be in the air from 6-9 a.m. in the mornings of Friday and Saturday.

Select 55 is a relatively new light-er beer from Anheuser-Busch.

Party in the Park moved to Jefferson Hall

Due to what is forecasted to be severe weather, Wednesday's Party in the Park has been moved away from its usual location at Yeatman's Cove.

The Party, advertised as the "Party Overlooking the Park," will still have a scheduled concert with the band Stays In Vegas at the Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee. Admission will remain free.

Party in the Park will return to Yeatman's Cove on June 8 with Your Villain My Hero performing.
