Local students pretend to be wax figures of famous Kentuckians

FT. THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - Some local school kids are creating their own wax museum of famous Kentuckians to help raise money for a good cause.

On Wednesday at Ruth Moyer School in Fort Thomas kids from the 4th grade will stand still like wax figures pretending to be famous people from the past and present of Kentucky history. The children will strike their poses at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., complete with their own props and will be prepared to recite a biography of the famous person they are pretending to be.

Famous Kentuckians that will be portrayed include former Bengal Chris Collinsworth, Colonel Sanders, Kentucky basketball coach Adolf Rupp and Tricia Macke from Fox 19!

The students will also have collection cans to raise money for selected charities. The school is located at 219 Highland Avenue in Ft. Thomas.

WNKU buying Middletown stations in huge signal expansion

WNKU buying Middletown stations in huge signal expansion

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) - WNKU, the well-regarded but signal-challenged Adult Album Alternative radio station based at Northern Kentucky University, is greatly expanding its coverage area by buying three country radio stations and combining them into a network to carry WNKU's programming.

WNKU has an agreement to start running the stations February 1st while they wait for the FCC to approve the sale, which typically takes a few months.

“Year after year, the number one complaint we hear is in regards to signal strength and reach,” says Station Manager Chuck Miller. “It got to the point where we eventually had to post reception tips on our website just to be proactive about it.”

That problem will be greatly reduced.  Two of the stations WNKU is buying are WPFB-AM, 910 and WPFB-FM, 105.9, in Middletown.  The AM has a small signal area, but the FM station's signal reaches across most of the Cincinnati and Dayton areas.

Parole denied for Cheryl McCafferty

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky Parole Board has voted to deny parole for a Fort Thomas woman who killed her husband.

Cheryl McCafferty had her parole denied and will have to wait 60 months before she will be eligible again.

McCafferty was convicted in 2009 of killing her husband, Bob, in their Fort Thomas home. She was deemed a victim of domestic violence by the court, meaning she could only serve 20 percent of her 18 year sentence. She also got credit for time served after she was arrested after Bob's 2007 death.

McCafferty pled her case to two members of the parole board last week, saying she wanted to be an advocate for domestic violence and said she had participated in every program available to her at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women, where she is being held.

WILDER, KY (FOX19) - When you think of hippies, you may think of Woodstock, NY or the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco, but you probably don't think of Wilder, Kentucky.

That may change Thursday when the Mellow Mushroom holds its grand opening.

The Mellow Mushroom is a hippie-themed upscale pizza and beer franchise, founded in the 70's by three guys near a college in Georgia.  This latest of about 100 locations has been open for several weeks.

Parole board not unanimous on decision for McCafferty; second hearing Tuesday

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky Parole Board won't announce their decision on parole for Cheryl McCafferty until next week. The two parole board members who met with Cheryl chose instead to defer her case to Frankfurt and the entire parole board of nine members; saying they could not come to a decision about her release.

McCafferty met with two members of the parole board for about 45 minutes on Thursday. She cried as she pled for her release and told them she was remorseful for killing her husband, Bob. "If I had left sooner, if I had gone to an attorney sooner, if I had told more people. I've beat myself up over that; thinking that I was trying to hold the family together and protect my kids," said McCafferty.
