PSC grants rate increase to NKY Water District

PSC grants rate increase to NKY Water District

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has granted a rate increase to the Northern Kentucky Water District, but reduced the requested amount to reflect questionable expenditures by the district.

In an order issued Friday, the PSC found that Northern Kentucky Water had justified the need for additional revenue in order to meet increased costs and to pay for system improvements.

However, the PSC also criticized the district for spending money on club memberships, employee gifts, promotional items and other expenditures not tied to the delivery of water to customers.

Polar Plunge Finds New Home for 2011

BELLEVUE, KY (FOX19) - One of the coolest events in the Greater Cincinnati area, the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics, will have a new home in 2011, but it  will stay in the same neighborhood. This year’s Plunge will move just down the Ohio River to Joe’s Crab Shack in Bellevue when it takes place on Saturday, Feb. 5. Participants raise a minimum of $75 ($50 minimum for students 18 and under) and take the leap into a pool set up in the Joe’s Crab Shack parking lot.

The Polar Plunge features brave souls – many in crazy costumes – taking a dip into chilly winter waters to help support the Special Olympics mission of providing sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The actual Plunge is only part of the event.

Current deer hunt could be Fort Thomas' last one

FORT THOMAS, Ky. (AP) - Officials in the northern Kentucky city of Fort Thomas will study whether to end bow hunting for deer.

An ordinance allowing hunters to shoot deer with bow and arrow on parcels of at least three acres expires after Jan. 21.

The hunting season that just opened could be the last one within city limits. The current ordinance was passed in 2007 as a way to thin the deer population after complaints about the animals in roadways.

City Administrator Don Martin says the City Council will review reports of deer-vehicle collisions and the number of deer killed by hunters and decide in the spring whether to extend the ordinance. Proponents say the hunts help keep the number of deer in check.

Opponents say it isn't safe to hunt in the city.

Giant alligator on display at Newport Aquarium

NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) - Visitors to the Newport Aquarium won't be likely to miss the latest exhibit.

He is a 14-foot-long, 800-pound American alligator, considered the largest in the country on display outside Florida.

The alligator is known as Mighty Mike and is believed to be about 50 years old. Mighty Mike is on loan to the aquarium from a private collection in Florida and is expected to be on display until late spring, when he's supposed to visit a Michigan zoo.

The alligator was actually under order in 2000 to be destroyed because of his size. But the trapper who caught him asked a local reptile expert to give him a new home, and that's where he lives now, when he's not traveling around the country.

The aquarium is beginning construction this week on the Kroger Kingdom of Penguins exhibit, and the cold penguins will be off-site temporarily.
