Fort Thomas and Walton-Verona vet named Fort Thomas Superintendent |

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - The Fort Thomas Board of Education named Gene Kirchner as superintendent of the Fort Thomas Independent Schools at a school board meeting late Wednesday afternoon.
Kirchner is now the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning for the school district, and has been serving as interim superintendent since the retirement of former Superintendent John Williamson in early March.
Kirchner earned his bachelor’s degree in History Education as well as his master’s degree in Education from Eastern Kentucky University. He also completed additional graduate work at Xavier University.
Kirchner began his career in the Ashland Public Schools and worked as a teacher and coach in both Hardin County and Kenton County schools. Prior to joining the Fort Thomas staff, he served as assistant principal, then principal at Walton-Verona High School before becoming deputy superintendent at Walton-Verona Schools, which he held from 2000 until 2010. In September 2010, Kirchner joined the Fort Thomas Independent Schools as the assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, a role responsible for the curriculum and instructional programs for the district.
In addition, he is an adjunct professor at Thomas More College where he teaches undergraduate courses to students pursuing degrees in education.
Board Chair Karen Allen stated, “We are very excited to have Gene as part of our team. As this new chapter begins, I am confident that under Gene’s leadership our district will continue to excel in academics, athletics and the arts.”
Kirchner added, “I am extremely excited about the opportunity to serve as superintendent in such a phenomenal school district. It is truly an honor to be part of the Fort Thomas tradition of excellence. I look forward to working with our students, staff and community members to build on that tradition.”
Kirchner signed a four-year contract with the district which will begin on July 1, 2012. He will continue to serve as interim superintendent through June 30.
