Versatile Newport musician dies at 57

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Eclectic banjo player, singer and bandleader Taylor Farley died of complications from diabetes and kidney failure Thursday.

Taylor Farley Jr. became interested in the banjo as little boy, after disobeying his uncle's instruction not to touch the banjo that was in his living room.

Inspired by Earl Scruggs, he taught himself to play the instrument.

He led Taylor Farley and Blue Rock for 30 years until his death, though poor health prevented him from playing in recent months. He was joined in the band by Taylor "Spud" Farley III, along with Loveland's Jerry Clutter on bass and Eddie Napier of Maineville on drums.

The band was ahead of its time in combining bluegrass, country, and rock music.
