COVINGTON (FOX19) - Northern Kentucky kicks off October as National Domestic Violence Awareness month with its 17th annual Day of Peace, held Friday, September 30th, from 11AM-1PM at the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center located at 1028 Scott Blvd., Covington. The event is free to the public. Lunch is provided through generous contributions made by: LaRosa’s, Heavenly Frosted Cupcakes, Colonial Cottage, and TGIFriday’s. Local group, Ellery, will provide music.

The event theme this year is: “Be a Courageous Voice for Peace!” and focuses on generating awareness to the realities of both stalking and pet abuse—often hidden forms of dating/domestic violence. Keynote Speaker is Bridgett Wright, survivor and advocate in the 2009 conviction of Russell Swigart, whom broke into Ms. Wright’s residence and stabbed to death two of her cats.  Ms. Wright turned her tragedy into an opportunity to advocate for stronger laws to protect people and their pets from domestic violence.  She is being recognized, at the event, for her advocacy efforts with the 2011 Amy Jones Advocate of the Year Award.

The event planning committee will also recognize the Illusion Modeling Group from Holmes High School for their generosity in donating proceeds from their calendar sales toward ending violence in the homes of children in NKY.

Day of Peace is an annual event held to promote peace and reduce violence in families, neighborhoods, and schools in Northern Kentucky.  Women’s Crisis Center organizes the event, working collaboratively with several other agencies in Northern Kentucky including:  Covington Independent Schools, Northern Kentucky Community Action/Youth Build, Family Nurturing Center, Chase College of Law- NKU, Kenton County Animal Shelter, The Point/ARC of NKY, Gateway Community and Technical College, and the City of Covington.
