White lights make Newport on Levee greener

White lights make Newport on Levee greener

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Newport on the Levee has taken a major step toward becoming a “greener” property. New , energy-efficient fluorescent light bulb fixtures were installed over the past few months in the Levee’s parking garage.

The project, managed by Becker Electric, has proven to be environmentally conscious by reducing the electrical demand in the area, while also brightening the garage with a wider light distribution.

The property’s previous high intensity discharge (HID) system 150 watt fixtures were replaced with three lamp linear fluorescents that consume 85 watts instead of 185 watts.

Audit of SD1 reports unbid work, missing info, incomplete board guidelines

FORT WRIGHT, KY (FOX19)- The State Auditor of Kentucky released an audit Wednesday of Sanitation District #1 that had been requested by Kenton County Judge Executive Steve Arlinghaus.

SD1 supplies sewage services for virtually all urbanized area of Northern Kentucky, outside Florence and Walton.

The audit says that in several instances the District ignored its own requirements that public bidding be required for purchases or projects over $20,000, made mistaken calculations in budgeting for project labor, made changes to year-end journal entries based on records that could not be found, and lacked some important oversight guidelines for the board of directors.

A statement from SD1 say the state had found them to have an effective structure for oversight and processes, although a response by the District to the Auditor said portions of the audit go beyond what Kentucky law requires in accounting, and that the District has complied with Kentucky law.&nbsp

Kentucky Lawmakers hear of wine industry’s growth

Kentucky Lawmakers hear of wine industry’s growth

FRANKFORT – No longer in its infancy, Kentucky’s wine industry is maturing and thriving, a state agriculture official told lawmakers during today’s meeting of the Licensing and Occupations Committee.

Kentucky wines earned 11 honors, including two gold medals, at the recent Indy International Wine Competition, one of the nation’s premier wine festivals, said Mac Stone, executive director of the Office of Agriculture’s marketing office. He also noted that the number of Kentucky wines entered in Kentucky State Fair competitions has doubled, from 100 to 200, within the past two years.

Kentucky wineries have expanded beyond the central part of the state to areas including Owensboro, Paducah, Morehead and southeast Kentucky, Stone said. In addition to making wine, 42 wineries have tasting rooms, five have restaurants, 21 host special dinners, and 28 host concerts or music.

“That shows that it’s not just selling wine,” Stone said.

Whether it be roadside, at the scene of an emergency, or in a crisis situation, rural first responders are often thrust into the role of a public information officer fielding questions from the news media and working with media outlets to quickly and effectively communicate information to the public.

Campbell County emergency operations chief William Ray Turner says that homeland Security defines "rural" as having a population of fewer than 60 thousand people.

This six-hour instructor-led course, AWR 209 Dealing with the Media: A Short Course for Rural First Responders, will be offered on August 17, 2011 from 9am to 4 pm at Campbell County Fire Training Center giving emergency responders the skills and knowledge they nee
