Northern Kentucky about to experience earthquake "ShakeOut"

BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Schools and government agencies in Burlington and across Northern Kentucky will join thousands of organizations across the rest of Kentucky and ten other states in the "Great Central U.S. ShakeOut" at 10:15 a.m. on April 28th.

Kentucky is one of 9 states surrounding the New Madrid Fault, which along with Georgia and South Carolina are practicing earthquake preparedness.

Indiana is the only state that will be doing its drill on a separate date, April 19th.

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency says Ohio is also participating.  The shakeout.org website doesn't offer any significant details on that participation, nor include Ohio in their guide to state activites, though they list Ohio as an associate member of the organization. Butler County Emergency Management Director Jeff Galloway says they are participating in a 72-hour management exercise in mid-May, after being told about it by the state last week.

Historical accidents make Tri-State a nuclear-free zone

Historical accidents make Tri-State a nuclear-free zone

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - While Japan worries about the state of nuclear reactors in the zone that was struck by last week's earthquake, Cincinnati has two reasons not to worry about such a situation in the near future.

The obvious reason is the lack of recorded earthquake activity in this region.  Another is that there are no nuclear power plants anywhere near the Tri-State area.

If you drew a line from Fountain Square to the nearest commercial nuclear power plant, that line would end 188 miles away at the Davis-Besse power plant on the shores of Lake Erie east of Toledo.

40 years, ago, planners expected that three nuclear power reactors would be within 60 miles of downtown, but the two projects that were planned to contain those reactors both were cancelled well into contruction.

The better known of these was the William Zimmer plant in Moscow, on the Ohio River in Clermont County.  The plant was under construction for a dozen years, until construc

Police say to watch pets, small kids after coyote sighting

COLD SPRING, KY (FOX19) - The Cold Spring Police are warning people to keep an eye on small kids and pets after a coyote sighting Tuesday night.

Police say they received a call of a group of about 8 coyotes around the 300 block of Pooles Creek Road.  The caller told police they wanted to make sure that people in the area were aware so they could to take extra precautions.

Here is advice from the Cold Spring Police:

"Take extra care if you let your pets out and keep a very close eye on children at play in that area.  Coyotes have been known to eat human rubbish and domestic pets. They catch cats and dogs when they come too close to the pack.

Urban populations of coyotes have been known to actively hunt cats, and to leap shorter fences to take small dogs. In particularly bold urban packs, coyotes have also been reported to shadow human joggers or larger dogs, and even to take small dogs while the dog is still on a leash.
