Hispanic Health Fair to be Held in Erlanger

PARK HILLS, KY(FOX19) -- For the 12th year in a row, the North Central Area Health Education Center (NC AHEC) will host a Hispanic Health Fair for the Hispanic/Latino population of northern Kentucky. 

This year’s fair will be held at the Marydale Catholic Center in Erlanger on Sunday, October 16, from 1- 4 p.m. The health fair is held in collaboration with the Centro de Amistad and Cristo Rey, the Hispanic parish in Erlanger. Over 300 participants are expected at the health fair.

The health fair will feature free screening tests for diabetes and cholesterol, as well as blood pressure, dental, vision and hearing screening.

Memorial Breast Cancer Walk is next Sunday in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, KY (FOX19) - St. Philip Church Health Ministries and St. Elizabeth Healthcare will sponsor the Fifth Annual Kate Geiger Memorial Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 16 at Pendery Park in Melbourne, Kentucky. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. with registration beginning at 9 a.m. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for students.

All proceeds from this event remain local, aiding the Holbrook-Minning Fund through the St. Elizabeth Healthcare Foundation, which provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients. All donations are fully tax deductible as allowed by law.

Bicyclists, runners, strollers, pets on a leash and all ages are welcome. The first 250 registrants will receive a gift bag, and every participant will be entered into a raffle to win prizes.

Volunteer your talents by joining the Medical Reserve Corps

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) - The Northern Kentucky Medical Reserve Corps provides citizens of both medical and non-medical backgrounds with a way to help their communities during a public health emergency.

Anyone interested in joining the Medical Reserve Corps is invited to attend an orientation session from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, at the Health Department’s District Office, 610 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood, Ky.

A light meal will be provided.

The Northern Kentucky Medical Reserve Corps is a branch of the federal government’s Medical Reserve Corps program, and its goal is to provide a volunteer pool for the Northern Kentucky region that can enhance and support public health agencies and the health care infrastructure during a crisis. Volunteers would be asked to serve in their own community; but may also choose to volunteer for the Tristate region or for communities in need around Kentucky.

Pi Kappa Alpha hosts its annual Powder-Puff tournament

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (fox19) -– The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity of Northern Kentucky University is hosting its annual Powder-Puff flag football tournament on Saturday, October 8th starting at 9AM.

The tournament will be held at Northern Kentucky University on the intramural fields behind the University Suites.  The tournament will consist of all female flag football teams that will compete to take home the title of the 2011 Powder-Puff Champions.

The tournament will start with pool play and will end with an overall champion.  During the tournament there will a punt and pass competition, a bracket challenge, and a concession stand to accommodate those in attendance.  There will be a $2 charge to enter the event as a spectator.

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - The Fort Thomas Fire Department has organized a blood drive for October 27th.  

Hoxworth Blood Center will be bringing their Bloodmobile and parking on the Fire Department ramp between the hours of 1pm and 7pm for blood donations.  

If you are interested in making a blood donation, go to the Hoxworth website (www.hoxworth.org/groups/fortthomas) and sign up.  Hoxworth generally accepts walk-up donations, but registration can cut waiting times.

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) - The new St. Elizabeth CardioVascular Mobile Health Unit will be offering stroke and cardiovascular screenings at locations throughout Northern Kentucky during the month of October.

Sponsored by the Bank of Kentucky, and made possible by the generous support of John C. Holmes, M.D., along with contributions from St. Elizabeth 2008-2010 Vision employee donors, the new mobile health van brings technology and expertise for diagnosing cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes to where people live, work and play.

Using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, the new mobile unit can perform an array of on-site tests aimed at detecting all manner of risky health conditions including carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm and high blood pressure.

St. Elizabeth offers free cancer screening for men

St. Elizabeth offers free cancer screening for men

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) - St. Elizabeth Healthcare will offer a free prostate cancer screening on Tuesday, October 11 from 6 – 8 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Edgewood and on Tuesday, October 18 from 6-8 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ft. Thomas. The screening is held in conjunction with the American Urological Association Foundation and the National Football League in the program “Know Your Stats” about prostate cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 240,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in the United States with one in six men being diagnosed during their lifetime.
