Summer burn ban begins May 1 in Northern Kentucky

INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky Environmental Protection Cabinet will once again issue a ban on open burning in the Northern Kentucky counties of Boone, Campbell and Kenton.

This ban will be in effect May 1 through September 30 and then beginning on October 1st 2013 the Kentucky Department of Forestry has a ban established as the fire hazard season. This ban makes it illegal to set a fire within one-hundred and fifty feet (150’) of any woodland, except between the hours of 6pm and 6am local time or when the ground is covered with snow.

The ban set forth by the Kentucky Environmental Protection Cabinet has the following exceptions, unless open burning violates Commonwealth of Kentucky laws or local ordinances:

(1)   Fires set for cooking food for human consumption.

(2)   Fires set for fire hazard prevention.

NKU President delivers annual budget address

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19)- The Northern Kentucky
University (NKU) President delivered his annual address of the school's budget
on Wednesday.

President Geoffrey Mearns
addressed faculty and students on campus, revealing how federal sequestration
budget cuts will have a minor impact on the university's budget.

President Mearns also conveyed
that Federal Pell Grants for students are protected through 2014 and will not
face cuts.

NKU will see reductions in some
types of financial aid.

Mearns says the Federal
Work-Study Program, which helps needy students finance the cost of college by
providing money for part-time employment, will be affected, as well as
federal support for sponsored research.

Man, 68, expected in court on child sex abuse charges

A 68-year-old man is expected in court Wednesday on child sex abuse charges.

Thomas Bennett, of Cold Spring, is facing six counts of related charges involving a child under the age of 12.

Bennett is scheduled to appear in a Campbell County courtroom at 8:30 a.m.

Gateway April 30 Expo Highlights Career, Education Opportunities to Students, Parents

Florence, KY (April 11, 2013) – Gateway Community and Technical College will host an evening for high school students and their parents to tour the college’s high-performance labs and learn about manufacturing careers, college credit available in high school, and apprenticeships.  The Advanced Manufacturing Expo is April 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Center for Advanced Manufacturing on the Boone Campus, 500 Technology Way, Florence.

The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are needed. In addition to college officials, Gateway’s industry partners will be on hand to discuss career opportunities and educational requirements with parents and students.

“The expo is designed to give parents and students a chance to learn more about the exciting and high-paying careers that are available in the high-performance production environment,” said Carissa Schutzman, Gateway’s dean of Workforce Solutions.

17-year-old U.S. Air Force cadet becomes licensed FAA private pilot

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - A teenage U.S. Air Force cadet has become a fully qualified and licensed FAA Private Pilot.

Christian Davis, 17, is now one step closer to becoming a U.S. Air Force pilot after he practiced taking off and landing procedures at Cincinnati Lunken Airport this week.

“He is an exceptional student” said the instructor. “But I am a bit nervous”. When asked if he was always nervous with students when they fly solo he stated “I am very confident of the students skill before turning them loose, but this student happens to be my son” said Stephen Davis.

Christian's father Stephen is also a pilot, and member of the Indiana Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.  “It is a great thing for father to be able to give his child a gift as great as the gift of flight” said Davis.

Learn how to identify and help control pond scum this summer

BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) - A planned workshop will teach residents how to help keep local ponds healthy throughout the summer.

The class is being held on Sat., April 27 from 9:00 a.m. - noon at Northern Kentucky University.

Participants should meet in Room SC 167 of the Dorothy W. Herrmann Natural Science Center and dress for the weather and lab work. Parking will be free if you park in the Kenton Drive Parking Garage - just bring your ticket to the workshop for validation.

The workshop will focus on how you can identify certain algal blooms with the naked eye and what you can do to remedy specific problems. We’ll look at preventative measures and Best Management Practices that work to keep excessive nutrients out of your lake or pond.  We’ll also use some simple tests to determine if your algae may be harmful or not.

Penguins on American Idol: We were wrong. Again.

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19)- The penguins at the Newport Aquarium think they know American Idol.

Well, they don't.

They wasted no time this week deciding Janelle would be kicked off next. And for the third week in a row, they were wrong.

The judges wouldn't use their save on Lazaro, who was joined in the bottom two with Amber.

Hey, some people (or animals) just don't know Idol.

American Idol is back on Wednesday, down to the final 5!
