COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - For 7 weeks this summer, children in Covington public housing had an experience of a lifetime….learning new skills, gaining confidence, getting to know kids from completely different backgrounds, strengthening their academics, and all of the fun activities offered at YMCA Camp Ernst.

The program of the Housing Authority of Covington (HAC), in partnership with YMCA Camp Ernst, was for 25 children between the ages of 6-13. It was an intensive therapeutic group experience giving urban children the chance to work closely with educational specialists, mentors, community leaders and peers in a safe, supportive environment.

Emphasis was on practicing many of the YMCA’s core values, which includes: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility.

Each camp day for them began with academics focusing on reading and math skills because statistically urban kids fall behind in the summer time.

“They market this as plant food, but they talk about how happy your plants will be and how not to overdose your plants, so you know this is not for plants,” Toms says.

Toms is one of only 12 students nationwide selected for the camp, which gives students real-life research experience in forensic science, criminal justice and computer forensics under the supervision of Elizabeth Gardner, Ph.D., an assistant professor in UAB’s Department of Justice Sciences.
