FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - Kentucky, once one of the best-known tobacco-producing states, will soon ban indoor smoking in public and workplae buildings, if a state representative from Fayette County has her way.

On Thursday, Rep. Susan Westrom will join Smoke-Free Kentucky to roll out legislation that would establish a comprehensive, statewide, indoor smoke-free law.  The press event will take place in the Capitol Rotunda at 1pm, in coordination with the release of the American Lung Association’s State of Tobacco Control Report Card.

  • Barry Gottschalk, President and CEO of the American Lung Association of the Midland States
  • John Harryman, CEO of Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) - The Northern Kentucky Health Department has a received a grant to work on four health issues in Covington, including a look at the potential impact of a smoke-free policy for residents of Housing Authority of Covington properties.

The Northern Kentucky Health Department has been awarded an $88,000 grant to target chronic disease prevention in the City of Covington. The funds from the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors will support four health initiatives within the city: study of the impact of a smoke-free policy for residents of Housing Authority of Covington properties; smoke-free policies for all Covington pools; ability to use WIC nutrition vouchers and SNAP food benefits at the Covington farmers’ market; and increasing the infrastructure of the Licking River Greenway Trail.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS (FOX19) - On January 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, the Northern Kentucky Legislative Caucus will hold a public meeting at Northern Kentucky University, new Student Union Ballroom.  Parking will be in the Kenton Garage, and participants can enter on the lower level of the Student Union, next to Griffin Hall, the College of Informatics building. 

The purpose of this meeting is to provide a forum for constituents to offer input on issues during the 2012 Legislative Session of the General Assembly.  The format for those wishing to speak will require signing in on a first-come, first-served basis, with the amount of time allotted for each speaker determined by the number of sign-ups.

Governor Beshear announces funding for ‘Safe Routes to School’ in Dayton

DAYTON, KY (FOX19) - Governor Steve Beshear announced funding Wednesday for eight projects that encourage and enable children to walk or bicycle safely to school.  

One of the projects is in Dayton. 

The program, Safe Routes to School (SRTS), is federally funded but administered by the Office of Local Programs in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Rural and Municipal Aid. 

“Once completed, these projects will provide an opportunity for more of our children to safely practice a healthy lifestyle by walking and riding their bikes to school,” Gov. Beshear said. 

Under the SRTS program, cities, counties and school boards can apply for funding for a broad range of projects and activities in close proximity to elementary and middle schools. Eligible projects and activities include new or improved sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes; public awareness campaigns, and traffic enforcement near schools.

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - The deadline approaches for Kentucky high school and middle school students to rev up their creative juices and enter the annual Secretary of State’s essay contest—this year with a new look that embraces modern information technology to better tap the imagination of students across the Commonwealth.  

About 300 students have submitted their views in the standard essay format and new ways to be considered for judging and the online people’s choice via the Secretary of State’s web site at www.sos.ky.gov

The goal of the competition is to expand civic awareness among today’s students in light of waning voter trends.  The high school demographic in particular, is about to become eligible to vote in local, state and national elections and the contest emphasizes the importance of this essential element in a democratic society.

Kentucky says snow crews are ready to go

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - It may be late in the year to hear this message, considering that by this time last December we'd already had several large snows, but the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says its maintenance crews are prepared to combat snow-covered and icy roads whenever they occur. 

Nearly 2,000 KYTC employees are standing by to treat and clear more than 60,000 lane miles of roads. 

“The safety of Kentucky’s roadways is the focal point of our maintenance program this time of year,” Transportation Cabinet Secretary Mike Hancock said.

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - The process the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) follows in the review and approval of coal-related environmental compliance costs incurred by electric utilities is explained in a video available online.

The narrated slide show covers the legal basis for the recovery of environmental costs, the PSC’s review process and the environmental surcharge through which the costs are passed on to a utility’s ratepayers.
