PWC awarded home repair grants for Northern Kentucky

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - People Working Cooperatively (PWC) a local nonprofit that provides critical home repairs, weatherization, modification and maintenance services to help residents stay safely in their homes, announced today it has secured $25,000 in grant funds for emergency home repairs in Northern Kentucky.

PWC received a grant of $5,000 for emergency home repairs from the Scripps Howard Foundation that will be used for the emergency repair program for low-income homeowners in Northern Kentucky.

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky Department of Finance Division of Engineering has selected EOP Architects of Lexington as the lead firm to complete a Campus Master Plan for the Urban Campus that Gateway Community and Technical College has proposed for downtown Covington.

Some of EOP's work may be familiar: they are the firm that previously designed the Nursing and Allied Health Center at Gateway’s Edgewood Campus and led the team that developed the master plan for the new Lexington campus of Bluegrass Community and Technical College.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Catalytic Development Funding Corporation of Northern Kentucky is one step closer to reaching their $10 million goal thanks to a significant boost from Downtown-based First Financial Bank. Today, the bank announced a $1 million commitment to the Catalytic Fund.

“We’re proud to have the opportunity to invest in an organization as important as the Catalytic Development Funding Corporation,” said Claude Davis, First Financial’s president and chief executive officer. “The Catalytic Fund will significantly accelerate economic growth and revitalization in our local communities by bringing high-quality businesses and residential developments, creating new job opportunities and attracting more people to the area.”

The Catalytic Development Funding Corporation and its investment fund are designed to serve as catalysts for the redevelopment of Northern Kentucky’s urban cities including in Bellevue, Covington, Dayton, Ludlow and Newport.

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Locally-based gourmet Pizza chain Dewey's has agreed to renew its lease at Newport on the Levee for another five years.

The Levee says "The renewal of the pizza hot spot is another indication of the vibrant business opportunity many retailers see at Newport on the Levee."

In the past six months, Newport on the Levee has signed gourmet grilled cheese restaurant Tom + Chee, which also has a location downtown, as well as announced the fall 2011 opening of new-to-the-marketplace Pan Asian dining venue Naked Tchopstix.

Three other tenants have recently renewed leases, and Verizon Wireless has signed up as a new tenant.

“All signs are pointing to a bright future for Newport on the Levee,” stated Harold Dull, General Manager of Newport on the Levee.

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - With a focus on job creation and spurring economic development the Northern Kentucky Consensus Committee has unveiled its list of priority projects for the 2012 Kentucky General Assembly session.

The list totals $366.2 million and includes transportation, tourism, education and community projects that will create jobs, spur economic development, jump start residential, commercial and industrial construction and improve public safety throughout the region’s urban core, suburban communities and rural areas.

“Recognizing that funding is tight in the current economic times, these projects will go a long way in enhancing economic vitality and quality of life, not just in Northern Kentucky, but the entire state,” said Consensus Committee Chairman Gary Beatrice of Beatrice Benefits in Fort Mitchell, Ky.

Plan for hotel on bridge moves ahead

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - An idea to put a boutique hotel and other businesses on the Purple People Bridge has taken a step forward.

The Newport Southbank Bridge Company, owners of the bridge, have hired DW Real Estate of Cincinnati as developer for the project.

That doesn't mean the project is a done deal.

New life for an old Newport house

NEWPORT (FOX19) - There will be an open house Friday for a Newport home, once virtually uninhabitable, that has been transformed thanks to a host of volunteers.

The small home at 430 West 8th Street was completely gutted, and even given a new layout. Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky and the Northern Kentucky Homebuilders Association are making the home available for a family in need.

They got funding help from the Northern Kentucky HOME Consortium, and construction help from Homebuilders' trade classes and outside volunteers,

People from those groups and Mayor Jerry Peluso are among those expected at the ribbon cutting and open house. The event will happen from 2:00 p.m. To 3:00 p.m. Friday.
