Food lovers to indulge at Taste of the Levee

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Newport on the Levee will be any food lovers dream between Oktoberfest and the sixth annual Taste of the Levee this weekend.

The Taste takes place on Saturday, September 29 and invites visitors to indulge in palate-friendly food options from a variety of Levee eateries including: BRIO Tuscan Grille, Brothers Bar & Grill, Claddagh Irish Pub, Dewey’s Pizza, GameWorks, Mitchell’s Fish Market, Star Lanes on the Levee, StoneBrook Winery, and Tom + Chee.

Each food sampling is $3 or less and tastings will take place from 12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

While browsing through the food booths, festival-goers may listen to the sounds of live music from Chuck Brisbin and the Tuna Project (12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.), Ben Alexander (3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.) and The Cincy Brass (6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.). Street performer entertainment and artists vendor booths will also be on hand.

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Celebrate Oktoberfest in true German style with the folks that started it all! Hofbräuhaus Newport will host three days of family fun, with contests, live entertainment, authentic Bavarian fare and its famous Oktoberfest beer.

The celebration will take place September 14-16. Restaurant hours: 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday; 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Sunday.

  • People of all ages will enjoy the weekend festivities, including contests, live entertainment, German dance groups, strolling musicians, circus acts and more.
  • The famous Oktoberfest beer, imported from Hofbräuhaus Munich, will be on tap. This is the same beer that is served at the Oktoberfest in Munich - a flavorful lager with a spicy hint of hops.

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - A tweet from Newport on the Levee on Thursday confirmed the opening of Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

The restaurant is located in the space once occupied by Johnny Rockets on the Riverwalk level next to Tom + Chee.

Hours listed on their website are 11am to 10pm; 7 days a week.

WILDER, KY (FOX19) – Apparently things have been going okay in the year and a half or so that the hippie-themed Mellow Mushroom restaurant has been operating in Wilder.  On Thursday June 14th the restaurant is holding a Customer Appreciation Party to say thank you to patrons, from 5-9 p.m.

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - David and Lori Valentine OF Fort Thomas have announced plans to open an independent coffee house in the former Three French Hens space at 118 N. Fort Thomas Avenue in Fort Thomas this summer.

Fort Thomas Coffee, which will feature gourmet coffee and a full espresso bar as well as breakfast, lunch and snacks, was created to serve as a community hub for the city.

“Our mission for Fort Thomas Coffee is about more than just coffee,” said founder Lori Valentine. “We want to deepen community in Fort Thomas by providing a place that encourages connection and creativity. We will be a true neighborhood coffee shop.”

The owners, who have children in Fort Thomas schools and have lived in the city for 12 years, want to integrate the coffee shop into the community, supporting local schools, organizations and neighbors with a special focus on creative endeavors.

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Newport on the Levee announced on Friday that the Indianapolis-based, Pan-Asian restaurant, Naked Tchopstix,is open for business.

Naked Tchopstix is brand new to the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky market adding yet another delicious offering to the Levee’s already great selection of dining choices.

Naked Tchopstix will combine two adjoining spaces to create a large trendy and hip Pan Asian restaurant featuring a huge outdoor patio.

Naked Tchopstix is a family-owned Pan Asian restaurant and sushi bar that also features a fun, casual lounge area where patrons may enjoy their favorite cocktail. Owners David and Maggie Lee opened their first Indianapolis location in the fall of 2003 and had a vision of creating a dining venue that brought the contemporary dining scenes of New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago to Indianapolis. And now their vision has arrived to Newport, Kentucky.

Campbell County woman is culinary Student of the Year in KY

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A Cincinnati State student who lives in Highland Heights and works in Newport has been honored in Kentucky.

Erica Johnson, who attends Cincinnati State’s Midwest Culinary Institute, was named the Kentucky Restaurant Association’s Student of the Year during a recent ceremony in Louisville.  Johnson, who lives in Highland Heights, is currently finishing a double major in Pastry Arts and Culinary Arts at the Midwest Culinary Institute (MCI).  She also works at the Hofbrauhaus in Newport.

“Erica deserves congratulations for a job well done,” said Chef John Kinsella, who along with MCI Chef James Myatt nominated Erica for the Kentucky Restaurant Association Award.

Kinsella and Myatt noted that Johnson has already built an impressive resume, one that extends across the full range of Cincinnati State’s kitchens to the world well beyond the campus.

Last April she earned a designation from the American Culinary Federation as a Ce
