Gateway Schedules Information Session Designed Especially for Veterans

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) — Gateway Community and Technical College will host a special veterans’ enrollment workshop Feb. 29 at 6 p.m. at the college’ Boone Campus in Florence. The event will take place in the Classroom and Training Building.

The 90-minute session will provide information about all of Gateway’s academic and technical programs as well as how to enroll and apply for financial aid. Gateway speakers also will discuss how to use military benefits and earn credit for prior military experience. Attendees also will tour the Boone Campus.

Highlands students named National Merit Scholarship finalists

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - Highlands High School seniors Rebekah Agard, Meaghan Allen and James Laskey have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students advanced from a pool of 16,000 semifinalists who were named in September 2011. Additionally, Highlands also had one semifinalist, Adam Bamforth; and two commended students, Ryan Hanson and Samson Lewis.

More than 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Hundreds of students from schools in the Northern Kentucky region will be at Holmes High School Saturday, February 11, 2012, competing in SkillsUSA to determine who has the best talent in areas such as advertising design, automotive, collision repair, computer, television production, web design, welding and more.

Students will also compete in the leadership category in areas such as debate, extemporaneous writing, job interview, prepared speech, medical terminology and more.

The competition is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chapman Career and Technical Education Center on the Holmes Campus, 2500 Madison Avenue, Covington. For more information, contact David Schaefer, Holmes High School IT Instructor, and SkillsUSA North Central Regional District Director.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. Rand Paul today announced his nominations to the U.S. service academies, consisting of 30 people from across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and many from Northern Kentucky.

Senator Paul said "a very rewarding aspect of being a United States Senator is the opportunity to nominate young men and women from across the Commonwealth of Kentucky to attend our nation’s prestigious service academies. I commend each of these students for their dedication to the United States military, and wish them the best through the remainder of the selection process.

Highlands’ We the People team wins eighth consecutive state title

Highlands’ We the People team wins eighth consecutive state title

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - The Highlands High School We the People team won the We the People, Citizens and the Constitution state championship on Friday, Jan. 27. This is the eighth consecutive year the team has won the championship, and their ninth overall state title.

The team will represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the national finals April 27 through May 1, in Washington, D.C.  Students will compete against teams from each of the states, as well as teams from American territories. The state and national competitions involve students’ testifying in a mock congressional hearing format. Students are asked to prepare formal statements and respond to follow-up questions from a panel of judges requiring application of the U.S. Constitution.

“These students have set out to become more knowledgeable about the Constitution and the critical role the citizen in a democracy plays in confronting the problems we face in the 21st century.

ALEXANDRIA, KY (FOX19) - On the week of March 5-9, Campbell County Schools will begin registering kindergarten students for the 2012-2013 school year.  Information about the date and time to register your child is listed below.  Full day Kindergarten will be available on a tuition basis.  Students should register at the school designated to serve their area of residence. 

Campbell County Schools covers Alexandria, Cold spring, and most of the rest of southern Campbell County.  Here are registration dates and requirements for registration:

Fort Thomas Schools starts Summer Theatre Program for high school students from all over

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - Fort Thomas Independent Schools’ Community Theatre program will add a summer theatre program this year for high school students in the Greater Cincinnati area.  Jason Burgess, teacher and theatre director at Highlands High School, will coordinate the program. “This is an idea that I have been playing around with over the last couple of years and am now pulling the trigger on,” says Burgess.  

This summer theatre program for high school students is called the Commonwealth Artists Summer Theatre or ‘CAST’.
