Summerfair Cincinnati exhibition spotlights college art students

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Summerfair Cincinnati, a non-profit 501(c) 3 with offices in Anderson Township, will host its annual exhibit featuring the artwork of students from five area colleges and universities. Fifteen local art students have been selected to display their artwork in Summerfair Cincinnati’s 2012 Emerging Artist Exhibition on display Feb. 10 through Feb. 29.

The Emerging Artist Exhibition will feature students who were nominated by their professors and juried into the exhibit. They represent the next generation of artists to emerge in the local arts community.

“The art these students submit is outstanding,” said Sharon Strubbe, Executive Director of Summerfair Cincinnati. “This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for the students to showcase their best work, and for the community to see the young talent that Cincinnati has to offer.”

Governor Beshear announces funding for ‘Safe Routes to School’ in Dayton

DAYTON, KY (FOX19) - Governor Steve Beshear announced funding Wednesday for eight projects that encourage and enable children to walk or bicycle safely to school.

One of the projects is in Dayton.

The program, Safe Routes to School (SRTS), is federally funded but administered by the Office of Local Programs in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Rural and Municipal Aid.

“Once completed, these projects will provide an opportunity for more of our children to safely practice a healthy lifestyle by walking and riding their bikes to school,” Gov. Beshear said.

Under the SRTS program, cities, counties and school boards can apply for funding for a broad range of projects and activities in close proximity to elementary and middle schools. Eligible projects and activities include new or improved sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes; public awareness campaigns, and traffic enforcement near schools.

NKU grad students heading back to high school

NKU grad students heading back to high school

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) - When students in the Northern Kentucky University Master of Social Work program started last semester, they were a bit surprised to be returning to a high school classroom.

The 15 MSW students and their faculty are part of an innovative Dixie Mentorship program at Dixie Heights High School. Classes for the second-year MSW students are held at Dixie and each NKU student is assigned a Dixie student who has been identified as “at risk.” The MSW students offer a “listening ear” and provide direction to help their Dixie counterparts overcome barriers toward completing their education.

“A parent of a student at Dixie Heights, Benita Rubio, noticed that there was a rapid increase in homeless students at that school,” said Dr. Holly Riffe, who directs the NKU program.
