NKU joins ‘Innov8 for Health’ Competition

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) - Northern Kentucky University students and student groups are encouraged to enter the Innov8 for Health 2011 Improve Transitions in Care Challenge to win money, expert mentoring and support to transform their idea into a viable business.

Each year a new “challenge” is selected to address a significant issue that is facing health care. The 2011 challenge is transitions in care. When patients move from one care setting to the next (e.g. from home to hospital or nursing or home to college) many things can and often do go wrong causing difficulties for patients and caregivers and increasing costs to the entire health care system. Innov8 for Health is looking for innovators to solve this challenge facing our friends, neighbors and nation.

The competition is open to universities and colleges in the region, entrepreneurs and small businesses. There is a dedicated track open only to students.

Kids shocked to find slavery still exists, take action to help

Kids shocked to find slavery still exists, take action to help

ALEXANDRIA, KY (FOX19) - Until recently, any discussions of slavery among the students at Campbell Ridge Elementary School were part of a history lesson. But when the students learned that slavery still exists today and often includes the enslavement of children, they knew they wanted to help.

The fourth-grade classes at CRES recently learned of Restaveks, or child slaves, in Haiti. Shocked to learn that slavery still exists and can include children their own age, the students sought out ways to provide a better life for the child slaves.

The students wrote and illustrated books specifically for Restaveks which will be placed in backpacks along with school supplies and various other supplies collected by the students.
