Hasan Davis Highlights Gateway Super Sunday Recruiting Fair Feb. 24

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) – Hasan Davis, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice and a performer/youth advocate, will be featured at the third annual Super Sunday recruiting fair hosted by Gateway Community and Technical College Feb. 24.

Davis, who is also a motivational speaker, will reenact the experience of York, a slave who accompanied William Clark and Meriwether Lewis on their historic expedition to explore the American West.

Super Sunday is a free event that will occur Sunday, Feb. 24, beginning at 1 p.m. at Gateway’s Urban Center at 525 Scott Blvd. Covington. The event is open to the public and is co-hosted by the Ninth Street Baptist Church of Covington.

“Super Sunday has become an annual opportunity for Gateway to reinforce to all students that a quality education is the best preparation for a good job,” said Gateway President and CEO Ed Hughes.

NKU to Participate in Online 'Transfer Madness'

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) - Help is on the way for Kentucky college students interested in transferring their credits or associate degree to a four-year university. On Wednesday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST, the state’s colleges and universities will host “Transfer Madness,” the first entirely online, statewide transfer fair where students can chat online with transfer advisors, search for scholarships, download materials and get questions answered.

Northern Kentucky University will participate in the online transfer fair.

“NKU is pleased to support this exciting effort which will be a great resource for students interested in learning more about higher education opportunities across the state," said NKU President Geoffrey Mearns.

Students can register early for Transfer Madness at www.transfermadness.org.

Register for March Classes at Gateway on March 1

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) – Are you ready for college? There’s no need to wait until fall. You can register March 1 to start classes at Gateway Community and Technical College on March 18.

Gateway will conduct open registration on March 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Student Services Center at the Edgewood Campus, 790 Thomas More Parkway. Students can register for admission, take placement tests if needed and enroll in classes that begin March 18.

“The March 1 open registration fair enables students to complete the admissions/enrollment process in one day at one location,” said Andre Washington, dean of enrollment management. “Students will be able to apply for financial aid, take the COMPASS placement test if they don’t have acceptable ACT scores, and sign up for classes.”

Campbell Ridge Elementary School needs your pull tabs

ALEXANDRIA, KY (FOX19)  - Campbell Ridge Elementary is in their third year of collecting pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

So far this year they have collected 200.8 pounds of tabs, but they want more. The RMH holds a contest every year for the school who collects the most tabs and this year, the Ridge has their sights set on first place. the school is asking for help with collecting pull tabs from the tops of pop cans, vegetable cans, dog/cat food cans, etc.

The tabs can be dropped off at CRES during normal school hours until the end of the year.

Fort Thomas Independent Schools recognized as "District of Distinction"

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - Fort Thomas Independent Schools was recognized as a “District of Distinction” by the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) and the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).  Fort Thomas is one of only eight districts to receive this recognition.

At the Kentucky Board of Education meeting on February 6, Fort Thomas Independent Schools Superintendent Gene Kirchner and Board Chair Karen Allen accepted a special recognition banner and letter of commendation presented by KBE Chair David Karem and KDE Commissioner Terry Holliday.

Superintendent Gene Kirchner stated, “We are truly honored to be recognized as one of only eight districts of distinction in Kentucky. This recognition is a direct reflection on the premium which is placed on high student achievement throughout the entire Fort Thomas community and serves as a tribute to our students, staff, parents and community members.”

Two Highlands’ Students Named Candidates in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - Highlands High School seniors Madeline Gates and Hannah Laskey have been named two of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Gates and Laskey were selected from nearly 3.4 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2013.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 49th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed on graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in the community and school activities.

“This is an honor and a great opportunity and chance to represent our school,” said Gates.

“I think being active members in the school and community is important,” added Laskey, “and I appreciate that this award recognizes our achievements and contributions.”

Gateway Poetry Jam Feb. 13 Features Brandon 'Xplicit'

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) – Gateway Community and Technical College will feature rising young poet Brandon ‘Xplicit’ Thornton at a Poetry Jam Feb. 13 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the college’s Edgewood Campus, 790 Thomas More Parkway. The performance is part of Gateway’s observance of Black History Month.

A former college math instructor, Xplicit is a slam poet who draws inspiration for his work from life experience. His performances feature poems about financial responsibility, credit cards, family and relationship struggles, responsible college living and Black history.  He has performed at more than 100 college campuses in the past two years and recently released a CD entitled “Life After Poetry.”
